Day #4

If you ask any 90’s baby what what their favorite Disney movie is, there’s a 94% chance they will say The Lion King. Released in the summer of 1994, The Lion King captivated audiences young and old. Who didn’t cry when young Simba cries out for a slain Mufasa or shriek with laughter at Timon & Pumbaa’s hula? It was a rainy day classic for elementary schools across America, and a staple of many of our childhoods.

Side note: I don’t know that the release of the live-action version later this year will be as impactful or even as good as the original but I absolutely will be showing up on opening night!

It should be of no surprise that along with crushing box offices around the world, the film produced a number of Billboard hits. The soundtrack itself went Diamond and is still one of the all-time, biggest-selling soundtracks from an animated film. Three of the songs on the soundtrack, all written by Sir Elton John, were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1994. The winner? Can You Feel the Love Tonight, my favorite song in the movie. Because it is by far the best song in the movie, it also won a Golden Globe and earned Elton a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The song sat atop the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for eight weeks and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

Shall we revisit the scene featuring this magical song?

Can You Feel the Love Tonight

By: Alexis Brown

Can you feel the love tonight?

There’s magic everywhere,

inspiration all around us

daring us to dare.

Can you feel the love tonight?

You don’t need to look too far,

it’s surrounding you,

a constant presence,

because love is who you are.
